What makes this deck fail
- Summarising the whole thesis. You cannot, and trying uses the time you need for the contribution.
- A long literature review. Examiners know the field; brief context is enough.
- Thin limitations. The slide examiners probe hardest, and vagueness reads as not understanding your own work.
- Overrunning. Timing is usually enforced, and being stopped mid-argument is avoidable.
- Dense results tables. One finding per slide with the supporting evidence beside it.

How long should a thesis presentation be?

What is a thesis defence?
The oral examination where you present your research to a committee and answer questions on it. The presentation is short; the questioning is the substance. A defence is not a summary of the thesis — it argues one contribution and defends the method that produced it.
What is a dissertation defence, and is it different?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably, and which one your institution says depends more on country and degree than on any difference in format. In the US a dissertation usually means the doctoral work and a thesis the master's; in the UK it is often the reverse. The structure below applies to both.
What is a PhD defence?
The doctoral version, called a viva voce in the UK and Commonwealth. It is typically longer and more adversarial than a master's defence — expect sustained questioning on method and on where your contribution sits against the existing literature.
How long is a dissertation defence?
The presentation is usually 15 to 20 minutes; the whole session commonly runs 60 to 120 minutes including questions and the committee's private deliberation. Doctoral defences sit at the longer end. Institutional rules vary and are normally enforced, so rehearse against your own.
What questions do committees ask at a defence?
Predominantly method and limitations — why this design rather than an alternative, what the sample cannot support, and what you would do differently. Contribution comes next: what is now known that was not. Results attract fewer questions than candidates expect.
