Best PowerPoint Templates

The best PowerPoint template is the one with the fewest layouts you will actually use, real master slides, and type that survives a projector. Most template hunts fail for a different reason though: the deck's problem is usually its order and its titles, and no template fixes either.

Where to get PowerPoint templates

Sources differ in licence, editability and how much rework they need. We have deliberately left prices off — template-site pricing localises by country, so any figure here would be wrong for many readers.

Source What it is Best for Watch for
Microsoft 365 built-ins Templates shipped inside PowerPoint Anything that must open cleanly for colleagues Widely recognised, so decks look generic
Slidesgo Google Slides and PowerPoint theme library Education, pitch and themed decks Free tier attribution terms; check the licence
Magnific (formerly Freepik) Broad design-template library Mixed design work, not decks alone Presentations are one category among many
Marketplaces (Envato, Creative Market) Paid template packs from individual designers Distinctive look, many layout variants Packs of 200+ slides you will never use
Your own brand template A .potx built on your masters Recurring internal and client decks Needs someone to maintain it
Deck generators Structure and styling produced together Starting from a brief or document Different job — see the last section

Six checks before you commit a deck to a template

1
Does it use real slide masters?

Open View → Slide Master. If layouts are hand-drawn text boxes rather than placeholders, every future edit is manual.

2
Are the fonts ones you actually have?

A template built on a font nobody in your company has licensed will substitute and reflow on their machine. Prefer system or licensed brand fonts.

3
Does body text hold contrast?

Aim for 4.5:1 or better. Pale grey on white looks refined on your monitor and vanishes on a conference projector.

4
Does it survive twice the text?

Templates are demoed with four-word bullets. Paste in a real paragraph and see whether the layout holds or the text shrinks to 11pt.

5
Does it have the layouts you need?

Most business decks need six: title, agenda, section divider, content, data or table, and close. A 200-slide pack with none of those is worse than a plain one.

6
Is the licence right for the use?

Free tiers often require attribution or bar commercial use. Check before a client deck goes out, not after.

You can run the contrast and legibility checks on any deck with the free slide legibility checker and deck contrast auditor.

The thing a template cannot fix

A template controls what slides look like. It has nothing to say about what they say, in what order, or whether the argument holds. That is why a beautiful deck can still lose the room.

The usual symptoms of a structure problem, none of which a template touches:

  • Slide titles are labels — "Budget", "Results" — rather than statements.
  • The ask appears for the first time on slide 22.
  • Three slides make the same point with different charts.
  • Reading only the titles top to bottom does not tell the story.
A quick diagnostic: export your titles to a list and read them in order. If that list is a coherent argument, the deck is structurally sound and a template will genuinely improve it. If the list reads as a table of contents, no template will save it. The slide title audit does this for you.

Templates versus a deck generator

Different starting points, and it is worth being clear which one you are at.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good PowerPoint template?
Real slide masters, fonts your audience actually has, body text that holds 4.5:1 contrast, and the six layouts most business decks need. Layout count is not quality — a focused ten-layout template beats a 200-slide pack.
Where can I get free PowerPoint templates?
PowerPoint ships with a built-in gallery, and Slidesgo and Magnific both have free tiers. Check the licence terms before using a free template in client work — attribution and commercial-use conditions vary.
How many slide layouts do I actually need?
Six covers most business decks: title, agenda, section divider, content, data or table, and close. Extra layouts mostly add inconsistency, because different people pick different ones for the same job.
Why does my deck still look bad with a good template?
Usually too much text per slide, or slide titles written as labels rather than statements. Templates are demoed with four-word bullets; real content is longer, and the layout absorbs it by shrinking type.
Should I buy a premium template?
Worth it if you present regularly and want a look that is not instantly recognisable as a default. For a one-off internal deck, a built-in template plus better titles will get you further for nothing.
Can I change a template after the deck is built?
In PowerPoint, only cleanly if the deck used the template's placeholders; hand-placed text boxes will not reflow. In Lumen you can switch between 37 themes across the whole deck because content and styling are kept separate.
What is the difference between a theme and a template?
A theme is the colour, font and effect set. A template is a theme plus layouts and often placeholder content. In practice the terms are used interchangeably, so check what a download actually contains.
