Keyword Difficulty
Keyword difficulty is a tool's estimate of how hard it is to rank on page one, calculated mainly from the link profiles of the pages already there. It is a useful triage signal and a poor decision rule — it cannot see whether those pages actually answer the query well, which is where most real opportunities are.

What the score can and cannot see
- It sees links. Referring domains and authority of the currently-ranking pages. That is most of the calculation in most tools.
- It does not see answer quality. Five high-authority pages that all miss the intent score as hard, and are in fact easy.
- It does not see your topical authority. A site with thirty pages on a subject ranks more easily than the score implies.
- It does not see format mismatch. If everything ranking is the wrong format for the query, that is an opening no score reflects.
- Scores are not comparable across tools. Each vendor uses its own scale and inputs, so a 40 in one is not a 40 in another.
- Difficulty is relative to you. The same number means different things for a new site and an established one.
When to ignore a high score
| Signal | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking pages miss the intent | Authority without relevance | Write the page that answers it |
| All results are the wrong format | Nobody has served this properly | Serve it in the right format |
| Results are years out of date | Freshness is unclaimed | Publish something current |
| You already rank for the topic | Topical authority the score ignores | Extend the cluster |
| Results are all competitors' homepages | Genuinely hard | Believe the score |
How Gixo Quill handles this
Quill has no difficulty score and does not try to compute one — that is a link-index product, not a content one. What it does is the step after the decision: producing the page in the format the intent demands, and checking with the overlap tool that it is not competing with something you already published.
Frequently asked questions
What is keyword difficulty?
A tool's estimate of how hard it is to reach page one, calculated mainly from the link profiles of the pages currently ranking.
Why do tools give different difficulty scores?
Each vendor uses its own scale, link index and formula. A 40 in one tool is not a 40 in another, so scores are only comparable within a single tool.
Is a high keyword difficulty always a reason to skip?
No. The score cannot see whether the ranking pages actually answer the query. High-authority pages that miss the intent are one of the most reliable openings there is.
What should I use instead of the score?
Open the results. Format, depth, freshness and whether anyone actually answers the question tell you more about your chances than any single number.
Does keyword difficulty account for my site?
Generally not. It describes the competition, not your position, so the same number means different things for a new site and an established one.
