What Is AI Slop?
AI slop is machine-generated content published without verification, editing or a point of view. The defining feature is not that a model wrote it — it is that nobody checked whether it was true, necessary, or different from what already existed.

What actually makes content slop
- Unverified claims. Statistics, quotes and specifics that nobody checked. This is the one that does real damage.
- No position. Text that surveys every side and concludes nothing, because a model with no instruction hedges by default.
- Redundancy. A page that says what forty other pages already say, with nothing added.
- Padding to length. Restating the introduction in the conclusion, defining terms the reader already knows.
- Volume as the strategy. Publishing at a rate nobody could review is the structural cause; the writing is a symptom.
- Not the use of AI itself. Edited, verified, opinionated AI-assisted writing is not slop. Unreviewed human writing can be.
Slop and its opposite, in practice
| Signal | Slop | Publishable |
|---|---|---|
| Claims | Plausible, unchecked | Verified, sourced, dated |
| Position | Balanced to the point of empty | States a view and defends it |
| Structure | Generic outline | Shaped by the actual argument |
| Length | Padded to a target | As long as the point needs |
| Review | None, or a skim | A human who could be wrong about it |
Checks that stop slop reaching publication
How Gixo Quill handles this
Quill's free tools are deliberately deterministic checks rather than generators: the content health checker, hedging check, overlap check and answer extractability check all run rules over text rather than asking a model whether the text is good. That distinction matters here — asking a model to grade its own output is not verification.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI slop?
Low-effort machine-generated content published without verification, editing or a point of view. The problem is the absence of review and judgement, not the involvement of a model.
Is all AI-generated content slop?
No. AI-assisted writing that is verified, edited and takes a position is not slop, and unreviewed human writing can be. The dividing line is review, not authorship.
How do you tell if content is AI slop?
Check the specifics. Slop tends to contain plausible-sounding numbers and quotes that nobody verified, hedge instead of concluding, and repeat what already exists elsewhere.
Does Google penalise AI content?
Guidance has consistently targeted unhelpful, unoriginal content produced primarily to rank, rather than the method of production. Content that is verified and adds something is not the target; slop is.
How do I stop my team producing slop?
Cap output at the rate you can genuinely review, and make verification a named person's job. Volume beyond review capacity is the structural cause.

Publish work you would put your name on
Quill pairs generation with deterministic checks — hedging, overlap, structure and answer extractability — so the review step is part of the workflow rather than an intention.
