What Is a Content Pillar?

A content pillar is a single comprehensive page that owns a broad topic, supported by narrower cluster pages that link back to it. The pillar earns authority for the topic; the clusters catch the specific queries and pass relevance to the pillar.

What makes something a pillar rather than just a long post

  • It covers a topic, not a question. A pillar answers 'keyword research'; a cluster answers 'what is keyword difficulty'.
  • It is the destination, not a stop. Cluster pages link up to it; it links down to them. The link direction is what makes the structure work.
  • It is worth updating rather than replacing. If the natural response to it ageing is to write a new one, it was an article.
  • It maps to something you actually sell. A pillar on a topic adjacent to your product earns traffic that never converts.
  • Three to eight clusters is the usual shape. Fewer and it is an article with links; many more and the pillar stops being coherent.

Building one

  1. Pick a topic you can defend

Something your product genuinely relates to, broad enough for several sub-questions but narrow enough to cover properly.

  2. List the questions inside it

Each real question is a candidate cluster page. If you cannot find three, the topic is too narrow for a pillar.

  3. Write the pillar to be complete, not exhaustive

It should answer the topic well enough to stand alone, then hand off depth to clusters.

  4. Link both directions

Clusters up to the pillar, pillar down to clusters. Missing links are the most common reason a cluster underperforms.

  5. Update the pillar, add clusters

Growth comes from new clusters. The pillar gets revised rather than replaced.

How Gixo Quill handles this

Quill models this directly: PillarContent is one of its content types, alongside cluster-shaped formats like WhatIsArticle, FAQ, Glossary, HowToGuide and Comparison. That means a pillar and its clusters are produced as distinct formats rather than the same article template at different lengths.

Frequently asked questions

What is a content pillar?

A single comprehensive page that owns a broad topic, supported by narrower cluster pages that link back to it. The pillar holds topical authority; the clusters catch specific queries.

How long should a content pillar be?

Long enough to cover the topic properly, which is usually substantial — but length is a symptom, not a target. A pillar that is padded to hit a word count reads as padded.

How many cluster pages does a pillar need?

Three to eight is the usual working range. Fewer than three suggests the topic is too narrow to be a pillar; many more and the pillar tends to lose coherence.

What is the difference between a pillar page and a category page?

A pillar explains a topic and holds internal links. A category page organises items for navigation. Category pages rarely rank for the topic itself because they do not explain anything.

Do content pillars still work?

The mechanism — one authoritative page plus supporting depth, connected by internal links — remains sound. What has changed is that thin clusters written only to link upward no longer earn anything.

Build the pillar and its clusters as one set

Quill produces pillar and cluster formats as distinct content types, so the structure exists from the first draft rather than being retrofitted.
