How to Organize Slides in Google Slides

Reordering slides is mechanically simple; knowing what order they should be in is the hard part. Do the mechanics in the filmstrip or grid view, but decide the sequence by reading your slide titles as a list first.

Last reviewed: August 2026

The mechanics

  1. Select multiple slides

Click the first slide in the filmstrip, then shift-click the last for a range, or use the platform's multi-select modifier for a scattered selection.

  2. Drag to reorder

Selected slides move as a block. For big moves, grid view is easier than a long filmstrip.

  3. Use grid view for restructuring

The View menu offers a grid, which is far better for judging flow across a whole deck.

  4. Skip rather than delete

Right-click a slide and skip it. It stays in the file but is not shown, which is safer than deleting content you may want back.

  5. Use section-divider slides

Slides has no true section feature, so a divider slide is how you mark structure — and it helps the audience too.

  6. Duplicate before restructuring

Copy the deck first. Reordering is easy to undo one step at a time and hard to undo after twenty.

Menu labels move. The sequence above is stable, but Google and Microsoft relabel and reposition menu items regularly. If an item is not where this says, search the app's own help rather than trusting any third-party guide's screenshots — including ours.

Deciding the order, not just changing it

  • Read the titles as a list. Export or write out just the slide titles in order. If that list is not a coherent argument, reordering will not fix it.
  • Group by decision, not by topic. Slides that support one decision belong together, even if they come from different sources.
  • Put backup after the close. Anything you would only show if asked belongs behind an appendix divider.
  • Watch for repeated points. Three slides making the same argument with different charts is a common symptom of merging decks.
  • Check the opening survives the reorder. The first two slides do most of the work; verify them last.

Frequently asked questions

How do I select multiple slides in Google Slides?

Click the first slide in the filmstrip and shift-click the last to select a range, or use your platform's multi-select modifier to pick scattered slides. Selected slides then drag as one block.

How do I reorder slides quickly?

Switch to grid view from the View menu. Judging flow across a whole deck is far easier there than scrolling a long filmstrip.

Can I create sections in Google Slides?

There is no true section feature as in PowerPoint. Use divider slides instead, which also helps the audience follow the structure.

How do I hide a slide without deleting it?

Right-click the slide and skip it. It stays in the file but is not shown when presenting, which is safer than deleting material you may need again.

What order should slides be in?

Whatever order makes the titles read as a coherent argument top to bottom. Write the titles out as a list — if that list does not tell the story, the problem is the writing, not the order.

Build the deck, not just the slide

Gixo Lumen turns your material into a sequenced deck across 30 slide layouts and 37 themes. Building manually from a blank deck is free and unlimited, and PPTX export carries no paywall.
