How to Add Video to Google Slides

Google Slides supports video from YouTube, from Drive, and by URL. The step everyone skips is checking that the video's own sharing permissions let your audience see it — which is the single most common cause of a blank box during a presentation.

Adding the video

  1. Insert, then Video

    Choose the slide first. The Insert menu carries the Video option.

  2. Pick your source

    Search YouTube, paste a YouTube URL, or choose a file already in your Drive. Drive files must be video formats Slides supports.

  3. Set start and end times

    Right-click the video and open format options. Trimming to the 40 seconds you actually need is almost always better than playing a full clip.

  4. Decide on autoplay and mute

    Format options control whether it plays on click or automatically, and whether it starts muted. Autoplay in a live talk is usually a mistake.

  5. Check permissions as your audience

    A Drive video set to private shows an error to everyone else. Open the deck in a private window to test what others will see.

  6. Have a fallback

    If the venue's network fails, embedded video fails. A screenshot on the next slide costs nothing and saves the moment.

Menu labels move. The sequence above is stable, but Google and Microsoft relabel and reposition menu items regularly. If an item is not where this says, search the app's own help rather than trusting any third-party guide's screenshots — including ours.

What breaks video in a real presentation

  • Drive sharing permissions. The most common failure by a wide margin. Test in a private window before you present.
  • No network. YouTube and Drive video both need connectivity — conference wifi is where decks go to die.
  • Full-length clips. Trim to the segment that makes the point; nobody wants four minutes of a five-minute video.
  • Autoplay on a shared screen. It fires while you are still talking, and audio collides with your voice.
  • Exporting to PPTX. Video embedding does not survive format conversion reliably — check playback after any export.
