How do you build a variance analysis chart?
First decide which question the chart should answer. To compare actual and budget levels, paste a CSV with separate Actual and Budget series for the same period and unit. To show the gap against plan, chart a signed amount calculated as actual minus plan. A negative value shows a shortfall in that arithmetic; whether it is favorable or adverse depends on the metric and your interpretation.
For a calculation-backed handoff, Business's editable Operating review example includes planned and actual inputs, revenue variance and a percentage calculated as (actual − plan) ÷ plan × 100. Review and replace its sample assumptions, confirm the period and actual currency, then export the calculation metric pack. In Prism, explicitly map the selected metrics to chart cells and review expected units, raw versus displayed values and the retained calculation receipts. This is a separate path from pasting a raw Actual/Budget CSV; Prism does not infer budget variance from an arbitrary table.
Use a compatible bar or line chart when a signed variance may be negative. Keep currency amounts and percentage variance in separate charts: the metric-recipe shared axis requires matching units. Select a percentage only when its formula uses the intended plan baseline; a growth rate with a different period basis answers another question. A zero plan cannot produce this percentage calculation. Unit labels and replayed formulas help review the mapping, but do not independently verify the source or financial interpretation.
For the next reporting period, supply a new calculation pack and period label to the saved recipe. Store the resulting update candidate, inspect the changed cells and display, then accept or cancel it. Acceptance creates the saved visual revision; updating a published link or a composition's pinned child revision is a separate, deliberate action. New saved work and update actions require the applicable Prism or Lumen access.
