Why AI Decks Look Generic
ChatGPT and Claude both make slide decks now, free or nearly free — and put ten of them side by side and they look like the same deck about ten different topics. That is not a prompting failure. It has five mechanical causes, and knowing which ones you can prompt away and which you cannot is the difference between a fixable deck and an hour of fighting a text box.

The five reasons, in order of how much they cost you
1. Default-template gravity
When an assistant writes a .pptx file, it builds slides with a code library, and the library's defaults become the design: white background, black text, one title box, one body box. There is no design system deciding that this deck is yours rather than anyone's. You can ask for colors, and you will get those colors applied to the same skeleton — which is why "make it look nicer" produces the same deck with a blue header.
2. No brand memory
Your firm has fonts, colors, a logo, a way charts are supposed to look. A chat session does not hold that, and pasting brand guidelines into the prompt gets them applied approximately, once, and differently the next session. Consistency across a portfolio of documents is precisely the thing a per-conversation tool cannot give you — every deck starts from zero.
3. Text boxes instead of layout grammar
Real decks alternate layouts: a stats row, a comparison, a timeline, a quote, a full-bleed image. AI file output leans on the one layout that always works — title plus bullets — because layout variety requires knowing what each layout is for. The result reads as monotone even when the writing is good. This one improves with careful slide-by-slide prompting, at the cost of doing the layout thinking yourself.
4. Invented chart numbers
Ask for a chart without giving data and you will get one — with plausible values the model made up. They look measured; nothing marks them as fiction. If the deck is going in front of a board, a client, or an investor, every unattributed number is a risk you now own personally. This is the failure that costs the most, because it is invisible until someone in the room asks where a number came from.
5. Files that fight PowerPoint
AI-emitted .pptx files open, but editing them is where the cost hides: text sitting in unstyled boxes, spacing that shifts when you touch it, and the occasional "PowerPoint found a problem with this file" repair dialog. The deck was generated in seconds and then absorbs an hour of manual cleanup — which was the time the AI was supposed to save.
