GEO vs SEO: what changes when the answer has citations?

SEO improves a page's eligibility and performance in search results. Generative engine optimization (GEO) improves the chance that an AI-generated answer retrieves, uses, and cites a passage. They overlap on crawlability, authority, and useful content, but GEO emphasizes extractable answers, explicit entities, primary evidence, and citation measurement.

First-party measurement: Gixo recorded approximately 6,700 Copilot citations during a measured quarter. The count comes from a Bing AI Performance citation export; it is a citation measurement, not a claim that every cited answer was accurate.

What is the practical difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO is the broader discipline: make a page discoverable, understandable, useful, and competitive for a search query. Its visible outcome is usually an indexed result, impression, click, or conversion.

GEO focuses on a narrower selection event inside generative search and answer products. The page must first be accessible, then a relevant passage must be retrieved, trusted enough to ground an answer, and selected for citation. A page can rank without being cited, and it can sometimes be cited without holding a top traditional position.

The useful operating model is not GEO instead of SEO. Technical SEO supplies access and authority; answer-first writing and evidence make passages citable; citation exports and referral analytics measure the additional surface.

How should a team combine GEO and SEO?

1. Preserve the SEO foundation

Keep pages crawlable, canonical, fast, internally linked, and aligned to a real query. GEO cannot rescue a page that retrieval systems cannot access.

2. Write answer-first passages

State the definition or recommendation early. Use question-led sections whose first sentences can stand alone without losing scope or caveats.

3. Attach evidence

Link claims to primary or authoritative sources, name the entity and date, and publish original measurements with a disclosed method.

4. Measure both surfaces

Track search performance separately from cited-query coverage and AI referrals. Avoid treating a citation count as a ranking metric.

What does Gixo's citation number prove—and not prove?

The measurement proves that Gixo pages were selected as sources in the cited Copilot/partner query export during the measured period. It does not prove universal visibility, answer accuracy, causation, or future performance. Citation totals vary with query demand, index freshness, product behavior, and the measurement window.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO depends on many SEO foundations, including crawlability, clear information architecture, relevance, and authority. It adds passage-level answer design and citation measurement.

What is AEO vs GEO vs SEO?

SEO targets search discovery; AEO targets direct answers across answer surfaces; GEO focuses on being used and cited inside generative answers. In practice AEO and GEO overlap heavily.

Can a page be cited without ranking first?

Yes. Generative systems may retrieve passages from multiple sources rather than copy the first blue link, although strong search visibility can improve discoverability.

How do you measure GEO?

Use cited-query coverage, citation totals with a defined window, share of cited domains for a query set, AI-referral sessions, and downstream conversions. Keep synthetic probes separate from provider exports.

Which pages should you optimize for GEO first?

Start with pages that already rank and already answer a question a person would ask an assistant out loud: definitions, comparisons, pricing explanations, and procedures. They are the pages generative systems retrieve from, and they need the least work because the SEO foundation is already paid for. Deprioritize navigational pages, brand pages, and anything whose value is the interface rather than the text — there is no passage in them to cite. If you have a page that ranks well and is losing clicks to an AI answer citing a competitor, that is the single highest-value place to start.

GEO vs SEO: which one should you do first?

SEO first, in almost every case — not because GEO matters less, but because GEO runs on top of it. A passage cannot ground an answer from a page that was never crawled, and no amount of answer-first rewriting substitutes for being retrievable. The order follows from what is currently blocking you:

  • Pages are not indexed, or indexation is falling. Do SEO. Nothing downstream of retrieval is worth touching yet — GEO work on an unindexed page produces no signal at all, which is also why it is so easy to mistake for a GEO problem.
  • Pages are indexed but earn no impressions. Still SEO. The query has no demand, the page does not match the intent, or the competition is decided. Diagnose which before writing anything.
  • Pages rank and earn clicks, but never appear as a source in AI answers. Now do GEO. This is the actual GEO case: retrieval works, selection does not. Look at passage structure, whether the first sentence of each section survives being lifted alone, and whether claims carry sources and dates.
  • Pages are cited in AI answers but the citations bring nothing. Neither, yet. Measure first. Citation without referral traffic is a real and normal outcome — the answer satisfied the question — and the response is a commercial one about what your pages are for, not another optimization pass.

The one case for reversing the order is a page that already ranks well and is losing clicks to an AI answer that cites someone else. There, being the cited source is the recovery, and the SEO foundation is already paid for.

GEO vs SEO on one paragraph: a worked before and after

The difference is easiest to see on a single passage. Both versions below carry the same fact — the first-party citation measurement disclosed at the top of this page — and both are honest. Only one survives extraction.

Before (page-first). “Over the past year we have invested heavily in making our content easier for AI systems to find and use. That work has paid off, and we have seen encouraging results across a number of answer surfaces. Below, we share what we learned.”

After (answer-first, with the source attached). “Gixo recorded approximately 6,700 Copilot citations during a measured quarter, counted from a Bing AI Performance citation export. It is a count of citations, not a claim that every cited answer was accurate, and it covers one provider rather than all answer surfaces.”

Four things changed, and each maps to a row in the comparison table above. The claim moved to the first clause, so the passage answers before it explains. A vague quantity became a number. The number acquired a named method, which is what lets a retrieval system treat it as evidence rather than assertion. And the scope and the limits travel with the claim, so lifting the sentence out of the page cannot make it say more than it means — the single most common way an accurate paragraph becomes an inaccurate citation.

Note what did not change: nothing about the after version helps it rank. It is the same page, the same topic, the same authority. That is the practical shape of GEO against SEO — a passage-level edit that leaves the ranking picture untouched and changes whether the passage is usable as a source.
