An AI presentation subscription and a designer quote buy different services. Lumen includes an allowance for AI generation; it does not promise unlimited AI decks. Building a blank deck by hand requires an active trial or plan but uses no AI generation capacity. Your review time, specialist illustrations and any additional capacity are part of the total cost.
Worked budget: four monthly update decks
Illustrative assumptions, not market rates or a measured saving: four 12-slide decks, one operator, $50/hour internal time. Suppose your designer quotes $800 per deck and needs one hour of your briefing/review time per deck. Suppose your own trial shows a Lumen draft needs three hours of review and editing per deck. Replace both assumptions with your quotes and observed time.

The Lumen subtotal is conditional: confirm that your deck lengths, images and regeneration needs fit the plan. Four decks is the example workload, not a published Starter entitlement. Taxes are excluded. A designer may price a retainer differently; request a scope and revision policy.
When paying a designer is justified

If the job needs custom illustration, complex data storytelling or exact corporate-template compliance, include that work explicitly in the designer’s scope. Do not treat a generated first draft as equivalent to a commissioned final presentation. You can use Lumen to prepare the narrative and hand an exported draft to the designer.
Recurring updates using information you already own
Lumen is a candidate when the main job is turning reports into a structured deck, checking the outline, editing slides and presenting or exporting. Test one real source pack, inspect the cited sources and measure your editing effort. Check the PowerPoint in the recipient’s software: supported layouts retain editable text and shapes, while complex slides may be rendered as images.
What changes the bill
- More people: Lumen pricing is per seat with plan minimums. Compare the team total, not only the headline price.
- More AI work: Generations and regenerations use plan capacity; manual deck editing is a different activity.

Questions before you choose
Does the subscription include unlimited AI presentations?
No. AI generation uses plan capacity. Manual blank-deck creation requires active Lumen access but does not consume AI generation capacity. Downloading your existing decks does not require an active plan.
How should I compare a designer quote with Lumen?
Use the same source material, deck length, deadline and required handoff. Add subscription or design fees, internal briefing and review time, extra capacity and specialist production. The worked budget is an illustration, not a quoted market rate or a guaranteed saving.
Can I cancel the designer after generating the draft?
Only if your reviewed draft meets the actual brief. Bespoke artwork, exact template matching and high-stakes narrative work may still need specialist help. Inspect the exported file before deciding.
Is the cheapest plan enough for four decks?
The four-deck example is a planning assumption, not an output entitlement. Check plan capacity against your lengths, image needs and regeneration frequency, and test one representative deck before choosing a plan.
