Gixo Lumen · deck structure

New Hire Onboarding Presentation

Most onboarding decks front-load history and culture, then run out of time before the part that makes someone useful. This structure inverts that: orientation first, company story later, and a first-week checklist that survives the meeting.

AudienceSomeone in their first week
Typical length12–18 slides
Runs for45–60 minutes

The slide sequence

Each step names the Lumen slide layout to use, so you can build this deck by adding layouts to a blank deck in order. Manual building is free and unlimited, and it does not consume the AI meter.

  1. Welcome, and what this session covers

Set expectations. A new joiner has had three of these already today.

    Title
  2. Who you will work with

Names, roles, and who to ask for what. The single most-referenced slide later.

    Team
  3. What the team is responsible for

Scope and boundaries — what lands here and what does not.

    TitleContent
  4. How work actually flows

The real path from request to done, including the informal steps.

    Process
  5. The tools, and what each is for

Not a login list — which tool answers which question.

    IconGrid
  6. Your first week

Day-by-day checklist with owners. This is the slide they will screenshot.

    Timeline
  7. What good looks like here

Two or three concrete standards, with an example of each.

    Comparison
  8. Where to ask when you are stuck

Channel, person, expected response time. Removes the fear of asking.

    FeatureCallout
  9. The company story, briefly

Now, not first. Context lands better once the day-to-day makes sense.

    Timeline
  10. How we make decisions

Who decides what, and how disagreement is handled.

    Matrix
  11. Questions people usually have

Pre-empt the ones nobody asks aloud — expenses, hours, time off.

    FAQ
  12. Your first check-in

Date, with whom, and what you will be asked. Ends ambiguity.

Read the titles alone before you present. Written as statements rather than labels, the titles of this deck should tell the whole story on their own. If they read as a table of contents, the sequence is fine but the writing is not.

What makes this deck fail

  • Twenty minutes of company history first. It is the least useful information on their first day.
  • A tool list with no purpose attached. Twelve logins and no idea which one to open.
  • No named person to ask. New joiners will sit stuck for hours rather than interrupt a stranger.
  • A first week with no checklist. Vague instructions produce a week of waiting to be told.
  • One deck for every role. The generic half is fine; the role-specific half needs to be role-specific.

Frequently asked questions

What should be in a new hire onboarding presentation?

Who they will work with, how work actually flows, which tool answers which question, a first-week checklist with owners, and a named person to ask when stuck. Company history can wait.

How long should onboarding take?

Keep any single session to 45 to 60 minutes. Onboarding spread across the first week retains far better than one long day of slides.

Should onboarding be the same for every role?

The company-wide half can be. The half covering tools, workflow and standards should be role-specific, or new joiners sit through material they cannot use.

What is the most important onboarding slide?

The first-week checklist with named owners. It is the one people return to, and the one that determines whether week one produces anything.

Can I build an onboarding deck for free?

Yes. Building manually from a blank deck in Gixo Lumen is free and unlimited on every plan, including PPTX export.
