Chapter 1

The decision behind the deliverable

Most professional books begin as a collection of good material: workshop notes, client questions, frameworks, and half-finished explanations. The difficult part is rarely finding more words. It is deciding what the reader must be able to do by the end.

Start with the reader's next decision

Before you outline a chapter, name the decision it should make easier. That decision becomes the chapter's job, its examples, and the test for whether the draft is finished.

This is the difference between a manuscript that stores expertise and one that transfers it.
